The Christmas spirit is alive and well on Florida’s Space Coast, as Surfing Santas founder George Trosset and Zach “Buddy” Spurlock brought their infectious holiday cheer to FOX 35 Orlando’s Good Day Orlando on December 19, 2024. The lively segment highlighted the beloved annual event, which has become a staple of Cocoa Beach’s Christmas Eve celebrations.

A Tradition Like No Other

Surfing Santas started in 2009 as a small family gathering inspired by a whimsical car commercial. Founder George Trosset recalled watching surfers dressed as Santas and deciding to bring the concept to life on Cocoa Beach. What began with one Santa, two elves, and a single spectator has now grown into a massive event, attracting over 10,000 spectators and hundreds of surfers dressed in festive costumes.

George shared the heartfelt impact of the event, noting how it has become a cherished tradition for families and friends. “When people tell me it’s their annual tradition, it’s so personal and heartfelt. It really makes my Christmas,” George said during the interview.

Spreading Joy for a Cause

The event isn’t just about fun and surfing—it’s also about giving back. Surfing Santas partners with Grind for Life and the Florida Surf Museum, raising funds for cancer patients and preserving the history of Florida’s surf culture. This year, the event will also include the world’s largest CPR training, hosted by the nonprofit organization Who We Play For, which works to prevent sudden cardiac arrest through heart screenings and education.

“We’re thrilled to expand our partnerships and help save lives while bringing the community together,” George said.

Fun and Festivities

Zach “Buddy” Spurlock, who serves as the “Vice President of Elves,” added a touch of holiday magic during the interview, donning his elf costume and spreading Christmas cheer. He highlighted the fun costumes, joyful energy, and the unique camaraderie that makes Surfing Santas so special.

“Everyone’s happy, dressed up, and ready to celebrate,” Zach shared. “And if you want to spot the real Santa among all the Santas, I’m the elf to help you find him!”

A Christmas Eve Must-Attend

FOX 35 Orlando viewers were invited to join Surfing Santas on Christmas Eve at the end of Minutemen Causeway in Cocoa Beach. The event kicks off with a costume contest at 8:30 a.m., followed by surfers hitting the waves at 10 a.m. Attendees were encouraged to dress in festive costumes, bring their holiday spirit, and enjoy a morning of unforgettable fun.

As George put it, “By noon on December 24th, I’m ready for a long winter’s nap—but it’s all worth it to see the joy this event brings.”

Surfing Santas is more than a holiday event; it’s a celebration of community, joy, and giving back. Whether you’re a surfer, a spectator, or just looking to embrace the Christmas spirit, this Cocoa Beach tradition is one you don’t want to miss.
